I am currently working in Amazon and planning to leave Amazon around end of the next month(May, 2021) to move to Google, MTV. My H1B transfer is already in progress and planned to be all done by end of next month (May, 2021) for me to start at Google.

Around 7 Amazon stocks will be vested for me in July end. So, now, I am wondering, if I should wait 2 more months to wait on getting the stocks vested or should I just quit early and start my journey in Google early.

The advantage in waiting for 2 months is I will get 7 stocks of Amazon (which is around 21K dollars worth of money). So, almost 3 times my current base salary.

The advantage to start early in Google is my manager in Google would be happy as he has been asking me to join early and not sure how will he take if join 2 months late because of waiting on stocks. Other than that, my career in Google starts 2 months early which would help me to grow faster in Google.

In past, I talked to my recruiter that I would be leaving significant number of stocks and asked him to increase my signing bonus but he didn't agree to that at all. So, negotiation is not anymore possible.

TC offered in Google = 270K

Which of the 2 choices do you think is better? #tech #google

I am in a similar boat. Will be joining Google in early June. I have been told that to be eligible for prorated bonus in Fall (their next review cycle) one would have to join by this quarter i.e End of June. I did my math and makes sense for me to join asap due to huge bump in salary ! You would have to weigh in your options and take a call!

I checked with my manager. I would suggest you do the same to be sure.

I think manager would always wants you to join early, so their answer would be biased for that. So, I was thinking not to ask the manager. How did you go about asking the manager? Any insights?

  • I may be wrong but Google has a perf review in December?! And you may need to be there for at least 6 months to be considered for a perf review?! Something like that. You gotta factor in that too

    • Yeah something like that. Your refreshers come in only at your second perf review I think. Someone told me something like that

    • I think you get bonus on a prorated basis and hence the joining day may not matter that much for that. P.s. I am about to join Google and hence the points I mentioned may not be exactly correct. Just thought of giving you a diff perspective!

I feel that you should stand your ground. If they're not compensating you for the potential lost earnings then you might as well stay. I'm sure every manager is antsy for their prized new hire to start asap. The world isn't burning to the ground in just 2 months.
Maybe you can add you have X obligation in may which would also make it difficult to join asap or you want to tie lose ends (common thing to say)

However, I'm not sure of your tc difference and if it's great, then joining new company could be mathematically be superior or equal to staying for the stocks.

  • For 20k gross i would join asap. Just because you need a good relationship with your manager, and that will pay likely more than 20k over time.

What is old TC? Only based on that we can judge if it makes economic sense
