Hi there, I am looking to get guidance from someone who did not study computer science/ engineering in college and started initially in a non technical career but made a switch to coding/ swe later in their career. How did you go about doing it and what are the courses and other efforts that helped you (eg, networking over LinkedIn or finding specific companies that are open to junior swe). #tech

  • I did a general assembly course on PM and I can tell you it was really worthless. It was very generalized but I sort of expected that because PM is very different company to company. It was mostly concepts, and some wacky scenarios which I could have just got for free on YouTube/following PM leaders on twitter . The most valuable thing out of the course is probably connections - but even then.. idk… It really turned me off for future courses but I still think I want to do something like a data science or something like that course- because that may not be as generalized

With that said -the company paid so I didn’t really waste my money but I did my time.

Were you looking to make a career switch? Is there any other course or boot camp that you think is better or do you think getting a college degree is the best option instead?

Thank you that’s helpful to know. Did your friend eventually break into a software job through other ways? Or did he just have to go back to his previous job?
