I've been down-leveled to L3 at Google (currently L5 at Amazon). The tc my recruiter is unofficially floating is 135k and I currently make 160k at Amazon. Is getting Google to at least match my current pay even an option?

  • Never take a lower level job and less money if you're early in your career. The loss in growth and earning potential is massive on the long term. Google downlevels and lowballs candidates because they think their reputation allows them to do so. They have to be stopped. Unless you're desperate, stay at Amazon. Compensation growth is below average at Google too. Source: I used to be a recruiter there.

    • It's really up to the individual and what they value. But if your current company values your craft at $X annually, why would you offer a significant discount to another company? Is your time and expertise worth less at Google than at Amazon? Employers are your clients and your clients are buying your time. When you're ready to walk away, you will start dictating your price.

As a principle…never down level yourself. You worked hard enough to get to a certain level so why negotiate for something lower. Probably wait or try at a different place. But YMMV.

Yes, absolutely. You're only negotiating for 18% more than their offer assuming you want then to atleast match your current comp. If I was you, I'd try to be way more aggressive.
