Recently laid off senior, landed 3 offers in the past 3 weeks. All under $130k base. I haven't made that little in 4 years in a MCOL city. Tried to negotiate the 2nd but had it rescinded. What is going on?
Canada. But seriously, Canada. Companies realized they could outsource to a native English speaker who went to a Canadian university for something relevant to UX, and who has the same cultural design standards and competencies as an American. But they’ll work for peanuts because everyone’s salary is peanuts in Canada. A senior in Canada probably makes 100k USD. If that. Canadian outsourcing is going to drive American tech wages down. Why hire a Bay Area American when you can get a Vancouverite in the same time zone but at a steep discount?
This is probably it. Had Canadian colleagues this past year working for 80-90k USD. Couldn't believe it. Seeing lots of India (Bangalore) and LatAm design roles. Never thought our roles would be outsourced out there lol.
Where/what companies did you apply to? Sorry to hear it’s rough. Even at Google, new offers are down in base.
