Silicon Valley's Use Of PTO This Holiday Season
During the current pandemic surge, it is increasingly risky to travel during the holidays. And if employees are not traveling, will they use their vacation days?
With Thanksgiving being tomorrow and the December holidays being around the corner, a user on Blind, an anonymous professional network, ran a poll asking, “How many days off you plan to take for this holiday season (Thanksgiving + Christmas)?”
The poll had over 1,500 responses and different employees sharing their holiday plans:
Here are some key learnings:
- 16% of professionals are taking no days off
- On the opposite end of the spectrum, another 16% of professionals are taking 3 weeks off
- 24% of professionals are taking two weeks off
- 23% of Microsoft professionals are taking two weeks off
- 23% of professionals are taking less than a week off
- 20% of Amazon of professionals are taking less than a week off

A Facebook employee shared, “Facebook gave everyone the entire week off for Thanksgiving. I’ll probably take off Dec 23-Jan 1.”
A ByteDance employee shared, “Last year at TikTok I had to work through Thanks Giving and Christmas because Chinese PMs didn’t celebrate both, and still demanded the project done by the end of the year. I see they have no intention of changing that this year either …. 🙁 “
“Traditionally this time of year, many companies would be ramping up office holiday festivities,” said Amy Mosher, isolved Chief People Officer. “Due to the pandemic, the last frontier of normalcy either is not happening at all or happening virtually in some capacity. The future of work is here, and employees need leaders to make the right decisions about collaborative and self-serve tools to amplify their experience – empowering them to engage regardless of the circumstances.”
The holidays are going to look a little different this year. PTO use seemed to be on the decline due to COVID-19, and it appears this trend is expected to continue through the holidays and perhaps until pandemic-related shutdowns end.
