Story time. Up until 2022, engineering was a separate department. Senior engineering leadership were former employees of companies like Google, Amazon, etc. with 15+ years of industry experience. The team was small and the culture was first-class. The work wasn't the most challenging (it was just building internal tools) but you got to work across the stack and learn from other smart, motivated engineers. And leadership/management genuinely cared about their teams and invested a lot in engineer learning. Fast forward to 2023, the engineering department is being merged with Product. Said senior engineering leadership have all left/been ousted. A power-hungry MBA who knows/cares very little about engineering has been anointed the head of engineering. The engineering culture is all but dead. The deadlines are tighter and engineers, more pigeonholed now. Product Managers essentially lead engineering teams. I could go on, but you get the idea.
- No engineering culture. Do not expect an environment where you'll thrive as an engineer. Engineers are second-class citizens at Alphasights and are treated as such. - Product has drastically quicker promotion cycles. Your fellow engineers are still very smart and friendly. The work is still pretty good and they do still support you financially for personal development, but the department itself is a pale shadow of its former self. I still maintain it is a good role as a first job. But for anyone at a mid or higher level, I recommend staying out.
The firm, founded in 2020, has landed Saudi Arabia’s Neom smart city project as a client, thanks to the pedigree of its management and advisers.
Many of Peiter (Mudge) Zatko’s former colleagues have received offers of payment for information about him.
