Great place to start and build a career. Industrial laser are a a inflection point for technology and the industry is moving quickly. Lots of opportunities for project ownership in a R&D setting. If you’re a optical engineer or physics PhD you’ll find a lot of uses for your skills set and be well supported by the EE and ME teams. Pay starts off average to slightly above average for the industry. There is lots of room for promotion so high preforms can climb quickly increasing their compensation base. The management at the mid and high level are capable and want a good company culture. The leadership has done a good job of positioning the company in growth markets the require unique technological capabilities I.e margins. When you don’t have lab work you can be fully remote. I sometimes work full time in lab for a month and then work fully remote another month as I transition to different workloads as projects progress.
Some of the non-OEM product lines seem stuck in the mud with indecisions rather then a clear and aggressive strategy that the larger product lines have. No RSU for for lower and mid level engineers. This results in TC being lower than the tier 1 optical companies. This is driving high turnover for younger engineers who are in demand after working at Spectra Physics. This high turnover is very disruptive to the companies long term R&D effects.
