The best paying jobs in Albuquerque, one of the cities with the worst crime in the country. The mission can be pretty compelling depending on the group you're part of. It could also be very boring. Some of the most passionate researchers you'll meet. Also a significant amount of dead weight that is nearly impossible to fire.
Management is always promoted from technical staff. This means you end up with managers that don't know how to manage people. Technical direction is generally set by the broader federal government, so there's only so much that lab staff can control on projects. The pay is higher than the GS scale, but not great for the required graduate degree. Management will often counter with "if you're just here for the paycheck, this place may not be for you." You'll spend more time fighting red tape than making technical progress.
