A month ago I was fired… and I’m genuinely in distress

I was terminated from my position as a Solutions Analyst at a healthcare company after 10 months, under circumstances I believe were unjust and perhaps retaliatory. The incident leading to my dismissal occurred shortly after I had developed a Google Chrome extension, intended to streamline some of our internal processes. Although my manager and his supervisor had initially supported this project, concerns were raised by another team member about the safety and approval of the extension. This escalated quickly, involving multiple teams, including security, to assess the project's use of patient data. I clarified the project's status and my intentions, and after discussing these concerns with my boss, I felt reassured enough to go on a previously planned vacation to the Caribbean. However, a storm in Miami delayed my return, causing me to miss connecting flights back to Dallas. Despite my efforts to communicate these travel issues with my boss and adjust my work commitments accordingly, I found myself unable to access the company systems. My boss initially seemed to understand but then began acting as if I was in Miami and not stranded. He even reset my passwords multiple times, which was confusing and alarming, especially since he shared this information over insecure platforms. (Security and him on a google meet, and sending pics of my password, multiple times via text but refusing to let me speak to them or join by saying it was all done through slack) please note … they’re about to IPO this ain’t a small company. Upon my eventual return, I immediately engaged with legal and security teams to address both the app development and the miscommunications about my location. However, within hours, I was abruptly fired for allegedly lying about my whereabouts and trying to access systems without authorization—accusations that were both shocking and unfounded. This dismissal has had severe personal and professional repercussions. I've reached out for a review of this decision, stressing that it felt like retaliation and discrimination, but while the HR department has agreed to escalate the issue, I remain deeply unsettled by the whole experience. Adding to the complexity, I developed and contributed to projects that paralleled existing team efforts, which may have led to internal perceptions of me as a rogue employee. This misunderstanding underscores the lack of communication and collaboration within the company—a problem I had identified and sought to address during my tenure. I am now facing financial instability and have been actively seeking employment, reaching out through LinkedIn and expanding my job search efforts beyond my usual scope. This situation has not only impacted my career but also diminished my trust in a company that claims to prioritize human-centric values. My previous experiences with workplace harassment have made me more resolved to advocate for myself this time, emphasizing that the actions taken against me were not just inappropriate but unjust. (How did I afford the Caribbean? I paid for it with miles, and my new partner covered the cost as a birthday gift for me). I had literally not been able to enjoy and disconnect from anything in so long and this has now been such a heavy thing to process. More than anything I feel horrible because I know I wasn’t trying to do anything bad. #terminated

This was incredibly dramatic to read. Sorry you got fired for a weird reason. Hope you find a new job soon.

Aledade bEwY28 OP Apr 23

You’re correct. I wish I had just been a bad employee, I literally learned how to code a chrome extension all by myself… a new skill came out of this, and so did a lot of drive to make something better for myself.

Consult an attorney.

Aledade bEwY28 OP Apr 23

I was planning to this week, since they finally decided to give me the time of day and admitted to knowing very little. Essentially, someone said fire her, so they did.

Atlassian 5623309 Apr 23

Do it right away.

Have you spoken to an attorney in your state?

Aledade bEwY28 OP Apr 23

I’m going to now that I have a recording of them on record admitting to not knowing much about the prior issue, and not doing any open investigation including me upon my return. It was sketch and at will employment is so difficult to navigate through.

How did you record? Is it legal to record without consent in your state?

Aledade bEwY28 OP Apr 23

Yes, it’s legal to record it as it’s a one party consent. 37 minutes of a woman who had zero idea why I was fired aside from the 5 sentences written on a PDF… which they refused to give me a copy of, refused to tell me what I did wrong, and ignored me. It’s the epitome of “We have power, this person just needs to go, it’s messy, she’s bringing the wrong attention?” She had zero idea I was on security radar, and that people had been swarming me a week before. She thought I lived in Florida, asked me if there was another storm. Tbh, the call recording has shocked everyone. At the end of: “What is your ask, what do you want?” “I can see about us paying for your health insurance” smh.

They don’t have to give you a reason. It sucks but they don’t. It also sounds like you live in a red state. In that case you have even less rights than I thought

Looking backwards never takes you forwards. Find a new job.

For sure, I’m not dwelling on it daily. I have been actively and diligently looking for new opportunities. I’m confident that I can bring a lot, and even create on my own now. Only 3 people in my life know what happened right now and the internet can be soothing sometimes. :-)

Sounds like a huge L for them to lose you. You sound thoughtful, curious and more conscientious than the folks you reported to. I hope you’ll find something better soon. I don’t have anything to add about how to navigate this legally. All the best.
