Any tips?

Sunnova Energy beepbeeeep OP Apr 15

Interview places that don’t have live-coding rounds lol

We just passed on a candidate who was obviously assisted during the live round.

Oh it’s happening everywhere I’m sure. Saw a post from someone at Amazon complaining about many people using ChatGPT during their interviews Check out this post! "Interviewing ChatGPT (Tech Industry)" https://www.teamblind.com/us/s/CtzLNocp

The weird thing is that we use ChatGPT in the course of our daily jobs. I think it’s the dishonesty more than anything. If they’re lying about that, we have no idea what else they’re lying about.

What is crazy is no place is enforcing an in person interview. They continue asking leetcode questions, that AI LLM continues to get better at. All online in a zoom meeting where there's no way to prove anything. Interviewers are not really trained to spot cheating or play police officer. They are often leetcode monkeys themselves. Candidates have 0 downside to cheating off it, if they don't know the full optimal solution on their own. Yes, maybe a bad candidate might make it obvious they are cheating. But odds are many are just viewing the chat to verify a few lines, verify optimization, and that they aren't messing up their initial approach. If they don't need the AI, they pass. If they need it, they might also pass. They would fail either way without using it, so they have to use it at that point.

Oh no. I just got to an onsite round for a c# role that used coderpen and I sent screenshots of the quiz to ChatGPT (the recruiter did say the quiz was open book and Google was allowed). I never coded a single c# function in my life and the role was primarily a c# role lol. I’ve worked at a company that used a lot of c# to run a Microsoft dynamics instance and on my resume I just said something like “integrated functions in c# to the customer facing app (where I worked)”, but the reality is I didn’t touch c# when I was there. I lived in API call land and yelling at the c# developers when their api calls failed Then when I got to the interview the hiring manager said tell us about your experience with c# and I didn’t feel like lying so just said I don’t have much experience with c# and am more proficient languages like JavaScript and typescript. I saw the hiring manager visibly scowl after I said that lol, and I knew then and there I wasn’t getting the job. Got the rejection email last Friday haha

I hate those backend language specific interviews. They always want a code monkey to come in and be a c# expert, often for 🥜. Despite the fact you could learn the relevant language parts in a week they'll reject you.

Even though I haven't cheated my way into, I realize that at some point, we all are bigheads

Ya… the show is so good. I’m rewatching it again after working at Sunnova, which is basically a startup version of Enron focusing on solar networks instead of oil and gas lol. The compression algorithm parts are more funny too bc I’m teaching myself three.js right now and there’s so much about making 3D renderings in three.js efficient with compression algorithms.
