Hey everyone, I'm a hardware engineer with 4 YOE and just got two offers. Trying to decide which one is better for long-term growth. Help me out! Qualcomm: - WFH 2 days a week - Working on video codecs Startup: - $50M funded - No WFH - Datacenter domain - 10% higher base salary Total comp is the same for both. I think datacenter tech is more promising than video codecs, but I’m uncertain if the name value of Qualcomm outweighs the work domain. Which one should I go for? Appreciate any insights! #startup #tech #qualcomm
Startup will be my choice if you don’t have visa restrictions. You will learn a lot and acquire skills that will make you much more valuable engineer. No body cares about Qualcomm tag.
Depends on what you count as growth. Salary growth. Maybe qq. Skills growth. Startup.
Qualcomm is risky, they are actively moving work to low cost region. Just opened another large office in Chennai. All teams among video and audio had a large layoff last year with work moving to India. I will be careful about joining Qualcomm.
This. You’ll be subject to the new cost reduction scheme of layoff, rehire at lower cost, and/or move role to low cost centers. I think QCOM is one of the leaders in this practice, especially roles that can be satisfied with any degree of remote work.
Start up RSUs are just paper. Remember that. Qualcomm is real money.
take startup when young. You can always come back to corporate company later
I wouldn’t take the startup at face value. They’re extremely predictable. Qualcomm did layoff 1K jobs last year so, there’s that. Qualcomm has a really good name in this space. A lot of people from Qualcomm end up at either Apple, Intel or AMD. Especially, Apple.
