The same reason you say hello on a phone call. Cuz it's polite.
Unlike a phone call, messaging allows for asynchronous communication. Now if I reply 20 minutes later with sup and you’ve faffed off for 20 minutes I haven’t answered your question yet and now 40 minutes has passed where if you had simply said hi, here’s my question I could have answered hi, here it is, saving time and mental energy. If anything it’s more rude to waste my time.
