The people (ICs in particular) are by far the best part about working at Benchling, and are honestly the only thing saving this company. Decent salary and benefits for a startup, but current employees are generally underpaid and undervalued (working at one or two levels above their current title) without recognition. The company is in a bit of a money crunch, so this will probably only continue. In spite of (and maybe in part due to) the horrific company culture, there are great opportunities for career growth, especially if you are early in your career. As tenured folks continue to leave the company in droves, opportunities to lead critical projects are opening up. Just be warned that you will most likely be left without the appropriate support for such critical projects which can be a hinderance, so take that as you will.
The negative reviews are true, and are not an exaggeration. WLB at the company is generally alright as long as you're good at maintaining boundaries. This will be very important because the company is in extreme crunch mode right now. This is mostly their own fault. There is a huge communication rift between field and build, which often leads to our field division promising non-existent and expensive features to our customers, which we often cannot reasonably complete with the time allotted and resources allocated to us. If you bring this up to upper management, you will probably be ignored. And then when the project slips, you will probably be blamed for it. Management often escapes accountability, and so it ends up largely falling on the ICs who then have to do damage control while management takes credit. Culture used to be great circa-2021, but has really gone downhill since then. Management is toxic and is often not held accountable for their actions, even when there are completely unethical or are blatant lies. Managers will blatantly lie about performance, etc. The company seems to want to turn a blind eye to the current situation and pretend that everything is great when it isn't. I cannot emphasize this part enough. If you don't care about culture, you'll probably thrive here. If you do, you're better off going elsewhere. This company culture is toxic and WILL break you down and then hang you out to dry, especially if you try to give them any constructive feedback. Please don't waste your time here.
