As an individual contributor, the amount of stuff you would learn from your peers was gigantic - or at least that was the case, before all the layoffs (I had already left when those happened). Some people are friendly, but others (especially the ones with more tenure) aren't as nice (some because sometimes they are overworked, others because they indeed believe they are better than the rest).
Some direct managers are nice, but mine was terrible. Inexperienced, used to "speak his mind" even when this meant offending people or being plain wrong - something he never acknowledged, of course. Not fit at all to lead, but this kind of person thrives at Message Bird. All that is said about the CEO is also true. During my 3 years of employment, I saw at least 4 C-level executives leave the company after a crisis (and last I checked, some old engineering leadership also moved, after the recent layoffs). During many many many all-hands, he was visibly annoyed by the questions about compensation and promised benefits. He even walked the extra petty mile of turning off anonymous questions and drastically reducing the time Slack messages were available. So if you consider this place as the next step for your career, I would recommend you to reconsider, because your mental health will also suffer. There are much better places to work in the Netherlands, without having to deal with the ego of a single person that makes all the rest worse because he can't take no for an answer.
