Broad customer base using SaaS platform for a widely adopted open source CMS frameworks - Drupal and Wordpress. Very invested core engineering and product team that know the platform in and out, including the CTO that have developed several in house products and tools
Habit of pulling things off by having things built by contractors which prevents this core team from scaling. Also execs rely on agencies and contractors to pursue pet projects, especially when financial conditions tighten and start laying off employees. Very immature processes, ideas/features are pushed top down in an adhoc manner and with no conviction to follow through which then are paused midway when adoption sucks. Hiring process is very haphazard and several people who can’t even code have been hired as engineers or as engineering managers who struggle with basic tech. Even so there’s no internal training or process to set a baseline. All of this creating a culture of toxic negativity that prevents newcomers onboarding and integrating successfully, with a bitter and spiteful existing core employee base that’s constantly guarding territory and reluctant to help you become successful.
