It is 1000x easier to write code than it is to set effective product direction. The job of PM is much harder than being an SWE, especially a low-level SWE. People here often complain about how useless their PMs are, and they are correct! But it's precisely because the job is more difficult, and the bar much higher to meet, that organizations become bloated with countless idiotic PMs who do nothing but waste company time and money. But, all things considered, it is product visionaries like Jobs who have changed the world, empathetic CEOs like Nadella who have saved their organizations from the brink of collapse, and so on. Anyone can learn to write code. Few have the sanity and insight necessary to determine what code needs to be written. TC 550k
I was a before
Yeah we need more PMs to write 1 page vision docs that provide no context on usecases so that engineers can spend the time actually writing a real design doc and give the credit to the PM
couldn't have said it better myself
OMFG you literally described what Iâve been doing the whole time. While I donât deny that there are good PMs who know their sh*t but there are so many useless PMs with vague wording on their one pager PRD and all the actual work is just tossed over to me (sde) to figure sh*t out on both product and technical sides while writing shit tons of docs (+ dozens of followup sessions just to understand what the final product should look like lol). Oh donât forget to add them being so fking pretentious as if they know everything better when they are literally đ¤Ą
BS
Ok LCM
I agree PMs can be important, but itâs kind of weird to put them in the same bucket as the ceo. Theyâre still just cogs in the machine like the rest of us.
Are there pmâs who can code? How can you make sound strategic decisions without knowing fundamentals? Steve Jobs was a one off anomaly. Doesnât make everyone đ
There are no PMs who can code in the entire world actually
Because strategy, tactics, and execution are not the same thing. Fundamentals in coding donât affect business strategy.
Whatever helps you sleep better
@Verkada, mind referring?
Sure dm
Youâre outnumbered. If you think that all coding is translating requirements into machine, readable form, then you have another thing coming and lots to learn.
Coding is literally just translating requirements into machine readable form though
I've seen the documents PMs write over a period of few months. I could complete that with more details throughout, in a matter of days. They're honestly so overpaid.
