I'm rejecting any interview that is LC
so recently our company had some major reorgs and i will be joining a new team in march. However, beyond that, I am so fu***ng bored at work. I literally just sit, make stories, talk to customers, make some figmas, validate my features via talking to customers and making sure they are sound, make presentations, talk to stakeholders tell them what we are doing, look at future dependencies etc. But at the EOD, im so damn bored. Im not challenged. Im not learning anything. This might sound really dumb, but I absolutely love when i come across a challenge that i dont know how to do it. Everything here, I end up figuring it out after 3-4 days ( in terms of the process). am i on a shitty product ? should i go back to engineering ?(former data scientist) what am i doing wrong ? it it my industry ? i even applied and got accepted into grad school for computer science to kill my boredom at this point but i still have till august. edit: grammar tc: 190k
Let's switch
What’s the 3 year vision for your product? Do you understand your customers problems - not just what features they want or don’t want — but their needs at a holistic level so you can start designing customer journeys rather than be a feature factory? Sounds like you need more strategic work.
Yuck that sounds boring too
Lol if strategy work sounds boring then why/how are you building anything at all
OP, Thanks for the post. Many would not admit this so they don't appear ungrateful. I see where you're coming from. Can you share some business value or financial metrics tied to your product? Maybe then you can think in terms of OKRs and move into strategic product roadmap as others have suggested
Changed my username but im not high enough in the org to make changes/influences. I literally am just an execution monkey
Embrace it for now, and use your free time to level up skills. Maybe do an online MS in CS?
I can relate
You’re on survival mode. You keep looking for challenge instead of enjoying the flow. Based on what you have just shared it seems like you’re actually doing a lot of things.
Can you elaborate on survival mode? I also feel the same with op and it may be due to the fact that I’ve been challenged in every area of life since last 8 years and it became my nature-when no challenge or hardship I feel .. I don’t even know what I feel but is that what you mean with survival mode?
Yah in college i studied engineering and i was working 2 jobs, 2 research postions, the debate team, engineering competitions, and volunteering… might be why
Maybe just finish your boring work in half the time and try and build something to monetize in your spare time? You can find challenge out of work and double that earning potential
Yes to this! I’m bored as well ,not getting challenging initiatives , pigeon holed into a specific skill area, providing value to other teams to help, but much less experienced resources getting the interesting stuff and then they fail. Get the boring work out and work on you. Write down what you like to do or would like to do and use the other time to ramp up a different path. Im grateful to be working and in a company that is in general good, but I want to improve execution and raise up others so I’m working on making that happen either in the company ( actually have tried but I have no support from above) or outside. Focus on the value you could bring and see the boredom as an opportunity. Hopefully you’re not overwhelmed with boring work and can make time to evaluate, skill up and create a pathway to new value
what product are you responsible for? maybe the product / problem space are a bit too obvious?
the works becomes more fun once there is more uncertainty
Exactly
Join an early stage company (series A or something similar). Product at early stage is basically a constant fight for survival. You will have lots of problems but boredom won't be one of them.
Not dumb. I honestly don’t know what interesting product projects C1 could have.
yup... :\
Can you make a product that will take my old repo off my credit report?
