These days I am seeing more restaurants adding an automatic 20% tip. It’s probably because of rising costs & inflation and I understand it goes to pay for the staff. If you tell me, a dish used to cost $10 and now it costs $12 I’d be cool with it. But it really pisses me off that I need to pay $10 for the same meal and $2 to support the staff just so that the restaurant owner can report lower income and do some chicanery for tax write offs. In the future, I am going to ask restaurants upfront if they have any automatic tipping before I am even seated and if the answer is yes, I will walk away.
I stopped going to fine dining few years ago. In fact I rarely eat outside, even take out. However, last time I grabbed a take out the cashier flashed the square terminal for tip in my face. I, instead, buy high quality organic ingredients and cook at home. No preservatives, no food color, no carcinogens, and no one spitting in my food either. And making your own food is surprisingly cheap even with high quality ingredients. And there is so much health benefits. I lost 8% body fat. Gained lean mass. My gut health is better, skin is better, no dandruff problem etc.
The entire tipping culture in the US is broken. It’s frustrating at so many levels. I don’t mind paying 20% more , just add it to the cost of the food please and be done. Don’t guilt trip the customers into entering a separate line item.
This. I don’t mind paying more for the food. Just write it in the bill and make it transparent. And pay taxes on it. However, this doesn’t apply to me anymore since I stopped eating outside because I cannot change the American culture so just changed myself.
Exactly. This is just a way for the owners to have big tax write offs. All the automatic 20% tip places are fancy fine dining where the owner is probably driving a Ferrari to get his morning coffee.
Hate corrupt custom of tip, especially the only service is to serve you a cup of water at the beginning
yes yelp should tag this just like they got tags for dine in, wifi, etc
Just pay 15%. Dispute with credit company for the remainder if needed.
the other annoyance is they tax the fee also when I tip I tip on subtotal so effectively like 22-23% when they got the mandatory crap
All the payment companies are accomplices in this scenario. They build those default tips calculation into their software. Some even do sketchy jobs such as including tax as the basis for calculating tips. Disgusting.
Whole tipping system is flawed. Just add 20%, 30%, 40% or whatever to the price and I pay for that. Plain and simple. I don't want an ipad shoved in face when I wait in queue to order my cupcake and then wait in queue to get my food.
Feel free to choose zero when there’s no actual service.
I only pay 15%, no more in my lifetime

I'm rejecting any interview that is LC
but what if you ask that, and the answer is no, so you sit, but then they expect you not to tip, and spit in your food
Is tipping required in order to receive food without saliva?
I will call from a phone that I won’t be using to make the actual reservation.
