Heard congress distributing wealth
I keep reading something about a $160K cap. Something about RSUs being adjusted. Can someone explain what this means? What’s the cap about when it comes to devs and scientists?
+1 ..I am also eager to know how this works
In Seattle salary is capped at 160k. But they want your total compensation to be 300k. So they need to add another 140k. First two years that’s primarily through more cash because the beating schedule is 5, 15, 40, 40 (40, 40, 40...) the extra 40s are from grants you start getting after year 2, but have a different vesting schedule. So they idea is that every year you get 160k in cash and 140k in RSU vest. On top of that they assume a fixed percent stock growth (I think 15-20%). If the market meets or exceeds that your next grants are adjusted in size and vesting schedule to compensate So if stocks overperform your next grant will have a smaller value because of the way it overlaps with prior grants. If stock underperforms you will be given more stock in a review cycle and/or it could be granted on a 1 year instead of 2 year cycle The way this is significantly different from other places is you are less likely to get “over” compensated when stocks do really well. The new grants have a memory of the value of your prior RSUs.
There's a base salary. Supposedly that's capped at 160K. Then there's all the extra compensation which is hiring bonus + Restricted Stock Units. Let's say you're getting the max base salary + 50K hiring bonus for the first year + 30K for the second year + 200 RSUs. Then your first year cash in hand salary would be: 160K + 50k + 5% of your RSUs which is 10 RSUs that at the current stock price are equal to 13k. (Note: you vest only 5% the first year). Your total salary for the first year would be 223K cash on hand.... Then second year you get the next small bonus + you vest your stock (don't remember how much). First two years you get crappy raises (basically an inflation adjustment of 1-2%). Third year when your hiring bonuses are gone you can get a more sizeable raise which compensates for this, although I don't know if it's a stock refresher or an actual salary increase. 4th year you get the bulk of your stock. 5th year you get a RSUs new grant (or maybe nothing. That depends on how valuable are your contributions and if they really want to keep you). None of this stuff contemplates promotion. But I guess that's a small increase on the base + more RSUs. Actually I really never understood how raises work when you're capped so maybe another Amazonian can chime in and explain.
Each year you hit your target comp number. Year 1 you only vest 5% of RSUs, so that number is hit by giving you a signing bonus. Let’s say your offer is 200K worth of RSUs, 160K base. Years 3 & 4 you vest 40% each year so it’s 80k per year. So your target comp is 240K/year. Year 1 you only get 10k vested (5%) so you also get a 70K signing bonus. Year 2 you vest 15% and there’s also a signing bonus to get to 240k. That’s more or less how it works...so Amazon offers are actually very low risk and cash heavy in year 1 and 2.
Thanks. I agree on the risk profile, and cash heavy sounds nice. I want a house lol.
5 yr olds get paid in candies. Dental Insurance covered.
😂 THAT one is funny.
Let me explain this like you are 5... Whenever you get an offer from Amazon, Ask the recruiter your total comp... Basically all the mumbo jumbo ppl are talking about Amazon's comp in previous comments are telling you one thing "Amazon will make sure that your take home annual dollar amount doesn't differ alot from your TC"...
Unless the stock goes totally insane. I'm fairly confident my TC this year will go above band. Should come in around 210 for L5 syseng unless the stock tanks. And even higher if it continues to rise.
Are cash bonuses prorated for year 1 and 2? So suppose if I leave 6 months after joining. Will I get 50% of cash bonus for year 1?
Yes, they pay it out monthly. You would only have to repay relocation if you got that.
Did someone forget to mention the chance of staying over 2 years is quite low?
They don’t hire kids.
Meh, and apparently MSFT doesn’t fire old trolls.
ROFL!
