Am I allowed to ask which car a candidate drives?
I’d like to disqualify candidates who drive Teslas as I find it’s a good indicator of bad decision making and judgment of character. As far as I understand, it’s only illegal to discriminate based on a protected class such as race, gender, or orientation. There should be no legal issue with this right?

Ask an indirect question like tell me what you see when you open your garage door. This question will reveal a whole bunch of stuff about a candidtates organization skills, lifestyle and hobbies plus you will hear about brands which will tell you how insecure they might be or out the narcissists. Easy question without legal implications.
What if the answer is there is no garage? Housing prices are through the roof and cities like New York don't have many home garages.

If they choose a Tesla to drive around, what kinds of poor decision making will they do when evaluating components/vendors when building systems for work?

Legally it’s absolutely allowed. Mad people are going to complain in the comments but ignore them. You can do whatever you want as long as it’s not a protected class for equal opportunity
