Looking for thoughts on first new grad job out of college, and what's best for career. Probably would want to be in a dev role long term. Amazon is a return SDE offer to an unknown team / org (I've interned there 2x). Wondering if diversifying into Apple after already working 2 summers at Amazon could be worth it. Also wondering how hard to go from Apple QA → SWE internally or elsewhere. Also want to consider friends and work life balance. Apple: - QA role where l'd be developing an automation framework (not so much manual testing) Pros: - in San Diego - Girlfriend of 2 years here - best friend of 3 yrs in SD - better work life balance - surfing! - sunny weather ! Cons: - QA - lower TC (140k) Amazon: - SDE role with unknown team / org Pros: - higher TC (174K) - SWE - snowboarding Cons: - in Seattle.. - bad work life balance ??
QA has higher risk of outsourcing. Apple is a better company but internal transfer is not easy.. Amazon is a lottery. I joined a great team where my colleagues and management is super supportive but you can easily get screwed by some shitty person and got ptsd for dev jobs..
Pip is very common in Amazon
Amazon gets you an SDE title but honestly you might end up with your shit in ruins in less than a year if you get a bad team and miss your GF/friends/sunlight. Apple is a QA role which is probably worse long-term, so you need to figure out what your next few years of career development will be. That said, Apple is a TON better than Amazon in aggregate and if shit does hit the fan you’ll still have your support system there.
Apple. When you leave / when another employer calls they will list you as a associate so doesn’t matter
what do u mean by this?
If you leave Apple, by default in their HR system when you do a background check, you'll be labeled as an "associate", regardless of previous job title. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/02/10/apple-associate/ So you could "stretch the truth" when you interview for your next role post Apple, and no one would really know when they do a background check on you.
Unless you want to get stuck in QA career take amzn for now. Find SDE only jobs later in Sandiego
