Interviewed with databricks this week. Went through the whole SWE loop. I did very well so they move onto reference checks. They check references which I know all went well. Then my packet goes to hiring committee. They say being laid off is a red flag and reject. Why make me go through the whole loop if my result has nothing to do with my interview performance or references? Why not just reject me from the start when I said I was laid off? What kind of sick twisted shit is this? #engineering #software #swe
Asking for references after clearing interview was also Dik move tbh Companies shouldn’t ask for references if they are already doing background check. Why would the current manager support your case of moving out to different company unless you are in a good terms with a manger and manager is chill af. Many managers will bite you back and try their level best to jeopardize your current position and new position once they know you are planning to leave. Job search should always be sneaky process. Get offer, submit notice and gtfo
exact thing happened to me. If you are in their interview loop and you were laid off ask explicitly if it is ok to your recruiter and don’t waste time with them.
At least it is a good practice.
Are you not angry? Im feel like I want to fly to SF and burn down databricks office and give capital publically flay whoever made this policy. This is unreal.
Ya this is terrible. But just FYI lying might not be the best route since they actually seriously do references.
So is it because you were laid off or it failed at the reference? Did the prev manager give bad reference? This sounds like a nightmare
Stripe also does this bullshit Reference checks gives so much power to managers. It’s like your new Girlfriend is asking for references from your ex-GF before entering into relationship 🤣 If everything was so good with ex then why would one have the breakup? Btw people don’t leave only for money but they also leave because of: - their manager promised them promo but never gave one - constantly gaslighted them - got promo after dragging and received peanuts increment - never appreciated and acknowledged their work - played favouritism card - you don’t trust long term vision of the company anymore - you don’t like the direction team is taking for short term strategy etc Reference check makes you submissive employee and it’s not 90s anymore. Some bridges are worth burning.
Databricks also has shitty hiring process for PM. They ghost you after 1-2 rounds with no clear rejection mail and then have the audacity to ask for interview feedback.
When a recruiter ghosts rather than sends a rejection email or call, I directly email the hiring manager reinforcing that it’s unacceptable and reflects poorly on the company. About half the time the recruiter calls me the same day having obviously been chewed out lol. If candidates consistently keep complaining about ghosting, maybe we could get at least get these lazy dickbags to send rejection emails promptly.
That's madness. Almost every company there days ask candidates for feedback. As if this feedback was going to be ever read.
Op, that sucks, sorry to hear. The recruiter and maybe even the hiring manager probably didn’t give a shit, but in my experience hiring committees vary quite a bit depending which eng and recruiting leaders are sitting on it that month, and whether they had their coffee that morning. (Also, their CEO supports candidates reneging offers to go to DB, so that should tell you the kind of professionalism they encourage. Didn’t happen at Stripe, but elsewhere)
There was another databrick post a while back, If this is how Databricks operates I wager they are a shitty company.
So sorry that this happened to you, it's definitely not okay. Afaik we actually hired a lot of people who were recently laid off
Thanks for empathising, but db has a lot of lairs, egoistic, and passive-aggressive people. Now, guess how you guys hired these guys?.
I've been at Databricks for around a year, everyone I've worked with are super smart and humble, not sure where you are getting your data points from though. Fyi I'm in field-eng
You need to lie about your background from the beginning.
yes, from now on definitely. Still inexcusable behavior.
Lie about your background? Ppl already need to lie about themselves a lot. Lie about your age, gender, if you're on disability, or medical, or mental health issues, Don't tell them you were unlucky and got laid off. Don't tell them you're starting a family. Lie about the gaps between 2 jobs. What else? This is wrong from the beginning.
