Just imagine how many people would be saved from getting fired who are performing below the bar. Imagine how coasters would be fucked once they start coasting after promotion. Imagine how many worthy people can easily be promoted as it won’t be a one way decision. Demotions should exist!
I think it only makes sense to demote down to a terminal level, but otherwise agree. At least make the option available if they're performing well at a lower level.
Would be awkward to see the salary get reduced though but I guess it’s better than getting fired

Corporations don’t exist to protect jobs or egos of employees.
It's the opposite of having ego when someone voluntarily asks to be downleveled when there's a headcount for that. I see it as a win-win. The company gets someone with a proven track record and the employee gets the level they want. The employee is still being evaluated at their new level, not like the company is doing charity here.
I've heard Microsoft does this to partners
demotions do exist, it's just when it happens the person is forced to quit
Demotions ? Even re assignment can save many. I see folks getting fired while similar or lower band roles in different teams are open and finding hard to fill.
