Down leveling from Google to Amazon for role change

I am currently a program manager in a business org. I deal with regulations, risks and compliance. I have previous tech experience but after moving to US made poor career choices and ended up in this role. I don't enjoy the work I am doing. I enjoy the Google perks and benefits. I have been trying to move to TPM role to work with product and engineering teams for past 2 years. Due to bad market and layoffs it didn't work out till now. I recently finished TPM interviews for L6 position at Amazon. They got back saying I have L5 offer and also low TC than I currently make. Should I take this offer to gain experience in TPM?

For people who voted to keep interviewing.. How is the job market? I got only one call and was getting downlevel.

There are plenty of opportunities, do you have experience with overseeing ML projects? We have req for a L6.

L5 to L6 can take awhile to make that transition also highly dependent on your manager’s ability to write a good promo doc and then get buy-in through OLR for the promotion. You need to clearly show you are well “above bar”.

Sucks… I’m employed and I’ve been passively looking. TC is garbage and companies are just taking advantage of the surplus tech pool. My buddy from Google (SRE manager) took severance and has been out of work for 8 months. YOE= +20 years.

Google to Amazon itself is a level down(bad culture, Benefits etc) and now you want to level down on role and Package .. I think you are one of the spoilt googler who have no idea abt how life is outside google

Haha. I knoww!! Definitely spoilt in that way. No doubt about cultural shock. I'm worried about that too. However my problem is the kind of work I am doing. I am working on managing comms, timelines, relaying regulatory info from one team to other etc. earlier at least used to work with core engineers. Now that is also gone. So my work is pretty boring.

Amazon likes to say their L6 is like L7 in other companies, it's closer to l6.5 in terms of scope. But what this actually means is your comp is lower compared to actual fang L7. So don't take lower level and lower comp, not to mention other benefits like 401k matching that only vests after 2 years where the median tenure is 17 months (depending on the org, location etc ..)

pure bullshit their L6 is L5 in other companies .. We have some many amazon L6’s as L5’s in our team …

Exactly. imagine doing less for the same comp , that is just another great reason to leave Amazon
