😬 crazy? I want to invest $300K in Nvidia
I thought I could manage an hour+ commute each way across the capitol beltway, (only 3 times a week but still pretty bad) but it's been brutal. I live between baltimore, MD and DC and commute to reston. Started halfway thru last year. Yesterday I left at 8pm and got home at 10pm due to two crashes on the beltway. M has offered me 5k relo to get closer but I've been holding off because one of my roommates works in MD and I don't want to leave him out to dry. But I don't know if I can make it working 10s and 2 hours of commuting on top. I have another roommate who works in Herndon and she is willing to move with me closer . I'm thinking I can do actual DC (adams morgan, dupont, etc really good food and bars) for about 1500$ (1 roommate) but I would have to commute out of the city (still 30m). Or I could live in reston (1.2k for my share of a 2br2ba ), 5 min walk to work, less nice food and bars though. Or stay in some shit hole suburb to the north of dc like I am now, and buy a house (450k gets you a nice newish 4 bed 3 bath in my area. But boring) TC: 198k (probably less since our stocks taking a hit :(
You know what exactly is a shithole? Downtown of a city. And probably a lot of Balitomore too
Yes most of baltimore is a shit hole lol. Some cool places though.
Real advice here. Buy a house/townhouse in Reston.
Gonna be like 600k+, any particular reason?
Microsoft is growing its presence in Reston and Government workers can now telework as well. Home prices will sky rocket in the next 5+ years.

Check out Arlington.. 20 minutes to Reston rn
I had a similar issue commuting for a job and almost moved to boring ass suburban neighborhood close to the job.. ended up not being at the job long and would have been stuck living at that location. DC is your best option because it is close enough and central to VA and MD. Only move to the suburbs if you have kids and looking for good public schools, less crime. Live it up in the city, reduce your stress for as long as you can. Once you walk through the suburban home ownership doors, no turning back.
Hmm..I actually like Herndon and Reston area. It is boring compare to SF bay area (where I originally from) but it has everything convinient I need to live a life... I am also looking for an apartment rental around area since I got more TC once starting with Aws. I will never choose to live a place required more than 30mins drive to work....I can't imagine how you did that , that is way to much. I am single so I don't worry about school and such
I thought I would be able to wfh more but with JEDI we need to be in often
Stay in the town center. Starbucks downstairs. Walk to work. Lunch at Sweet green. Dinner at Jacksons.
Damn rent is so cheap there...
Yeah it's pretty nice. I have it good compared to to the bay area it seems. A good 1bed/1ba apt in reston or dc is 2200~
I did the same thing for a while. Downtown Baltimore to Reston, then moved to Howard county, commuting to Arlington. The beltway is a pain and the drive to a metro station+ ride is long. I would recommend moving to DC. Dupont Circle has decent rentals now, location is great snd multiple metro lines will make it easier. Try to find a sublet for the rest of your lease so the roommate isn’t left high and dry.
Dupont circle looks interesting.. would you metro out to reston or drive? Our lease is month to month and I can leave whenever
The metro worked well for me as long as I worked traditional hours (mornings between 8 and 10:30 and evening before 6:30). It tends to be much less effective after 6:30 pm, also the traffic on the beltway goes down then. I would recommend the metro during peak hours, otherwise driving. Getting stuck late evening in a metro station is no fun. From dupont circle, the nearby stops of gallery place and metro center offer access to all the lines through MD and VA. Another area in DC you can look at is Georgetown. University town, fun crowd, lots of things to do and places to eat at. It has great access to VA and DC but access to MD through the metro will take more time. DC has a lot of great spots to live in, just keep an eye out for safety stats in the specific neighborhood, as that can vary.
