#Reactgate

Tensions on React Twitter. A TLDR comment from Reddit: - After, there was a subtweet targeting a particular member of the community for a hand symbol at a conference (called the circle game where you make an "ok" sign below the waist and if you look, people get to punch you in the arm) which apparently became co-opted into a white supremacy symbol by 4chan a couple years back, which he wasn't aware of when he gave the talk. - The member is abrasive and vulgar but that's his shtick and everyone already knows that -- he's not actually a WS and doesn't support trump, etc, but it might be easy for some people of the community to get confused, and it looks like React might actually support this alt-right stuff because he's such a prominent name and gives lots of talks. There was a massive subtweet thread brutally attacking him by another respected member of the community about how he's this massive douche and has these "bro-y" followers and that we shouldn't tolerate him - Now the two groups (supporters of him, and people who don't like him) are fighting over how the symbol and him, no matter what its intention was, is scary to minority groups and certain people were harmed over it, and others saying how absurdly ridiculous it is that you could be harmed by a game people played in primary/high school where the intention was clearly not to show off some white supremacy symbolism. He has apologized and tried to clear the air regarding the intention of the symbol, but apparently that wasn't enough. And there's lots of fighting going on. She admits that she knew about the circle game yet still accused him of flashing a white supremacist symbol https://twitter.com/tatianatmac/status/1166395916288479232?s=21

Sounds like he's an asshole that should be more aware of the consequences his actions might have. The debate over the hand symbol notwithstanding, if he wasn't a giant douche it probably wouldn't have blown up so much. That said, people make mistakes. If he seems genuinely sorry and it was clearly a mistake, move on.

People shouldn't be pricks. Everyone overreacts and looks for new enemies. ... occasionally they take down a bad person but typically it's just a normal, good person who's livelyhood they're trying to destroy. Case in point look at "woke" people who try to destroy Bill Maher or Joe Rogan; both of whom are very down to earth people who have their own opinion on things.

Why does this belong on blind. Are we supposed to chime in on every internet conversation now or is Torvalds involved again? TC or GTFO

Seems like a bunch of social media overhyping the issue on all sides.

Honestly, this could have been resolved super easily, but everybody and their cousin (from all possible sides) had to pile on to this on Twitter and add their two cents and it got ratcheted up to 11.
