Hello everyone, this is my first post here so I’m not sure how this goes. I’m an engineer working in the oil and gas industry and I want to switch over to data science or software engineering. I don’t feel that the future for oil and gas is all that bright especially considering my young age so I just have a few questions for all of you! 1. What’s your opinion on software engineering vs data science. I do data analysis at my current position and enjoy it quite a bit. I’m sure I would enjoy software engineering too but would like to know more about future outlook and opportunities. 2. Boot camp VS masters degree VS self taught? I think I work better with structure so I’ve considered Flatiron School for data science since they have a job guarantee or your money back. 3. Since I already have technical project management experience and already work a little bit with databases, visualization, reporting, etc is it realistic to expect to be able to get an analyst role somewhere and work my way up to data scientist? I understand this is a lot but it’s been weighing on me for quite some time now. Thank you! #data #dataanalytics #datascience #softwareengineer
What is your engineering degree on? I am thinking on the same career switch.

Go expat and make tons of money as a petroleum engineer. No one makes more money.
Easy to crack in descending order: BIE/Data Analyst,SE,DS. Also get started with programming and SQL. You can decide later.
Hi. Thanks for the reply. Can you explain why data analyst is better than data scientist or are you saying that is the path to take? What is BIE? I would say I’m a beginner in SQL and Python. Currently taking classes in both.
Business Intelligence Engineer. Crack BIE or Data Analyst at FANG and you can try to move internally to DS
