https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-11-10-we-refuse-to-crunch-the-team-says-apex-legends-director From the article: "We also refuse to crunch the team, so we'll probably be slower at making content than if we worked 15 hour days but that's just not something we're willing to do," Grenier said. "We have nearly doubled our team size since launch to accommodate the content demands, so we're really trying to bring you quality content at a healthy pace." Is this true or PR spin?
There’s always an exception or a few cases. However, in my opinion EA leadership is very progressive with work culture and that includes doing away with practices like crunch time. Also when your game is live either there’s meticulous planning and execution or you got crunch time always mode. The latter isn’t true and is not sustainable.
EA doing away with crunch? That’s news to me, which studio are you in?
Really doubt if they work 15 hours a day. Maybe just 5
From what I've heard, they have fixed 9-7 work hours.
Developer here. When I work evenings, weekends, or holidays I don't exactly get reprimanded but it's a mixed reaction. "You should take time for yourself. Don't burn yourself out. Don't crunch. We want you here for a while."
I mean it really depends on what you mean by PR spin. For example, I think any company would preach not overworking their employees, having reasonable hours, etc. hell they probably will even make it a culture value. But then you get to perf reviews, you start talking about what was accomplished, etc. realistically, for some companies you HAVE to crunch if you wanna exceed the bar to move up. Also what if other people are working their asses off even if they’re encouraged not to? You feel pressured to do the same. So a company saying X and even encouraging X means shit when the incentives in place make you force yourself the other way. Don’t mistake culture by what they say and more what they do.
I've heard things from people who work at Respawn that directly contradict this, especially when it comes to QA.
QA always gets the short end of the stick id be curious to here if its across the board
QA also likely isn’t a part of the studio but a central org. It’s likely the case the employees of respawn have a healthy work experience. No formal information on the matter but just a reality of the working for a big games company.
