I am a new grad and I feel awkward to ask my friends for referrals.

Just be honest and ask for it. If you get the offer, there’s usually bonus
Dude. Everyone wants to give referrals. Most companies give a referral bonus (often 5k) so I'd happily refer anybody (within reason) to get that money.

How about the people you dont know? How should I approach asking them?
Express your interest in the company and ask if they have any tips for interviewing and applying. They should offer up a referral at that point if it's something they are willing to do.
