I have never been promoted

I have been in tech over 10 years and I have never been promoted. I started as sde1 and I kept hopping companies to get an up level. I’m now a staff engineer at meta: but I feel like I’m missing a sense of accomplishment with never having been promoted. At this point in my career I think getting promoted from staff to sr staff is highly unlikely as I’ve bypassed all the promotion opportunities. Tc 550k Nw: -500k (divorce)

Promotion in tech is not an ideal judge of your skills or hard work. It’s a good judgement of your political skills though. As long as you are not aiming to become a politician you are good

What is your strategy for interviewing for an up level? Do you not reveal your current level ?

Microsoft dumbluc May 26

Why does current level matter

Uber dara_ May 27

Wouldn’t the interviewing company change their perspective of you depending on if you reveal your current level?

Not OP, but one way in which one gets screwed has to do with stock-based compensation. The high earning spouse ends up owing much more than half. At the time of the divorce assets and liabilities are split, equally most of the time. So there goes half of what you earned. But: your stock grants are considered shared property too, because they were granted during the marriage. Yes, even for the RSUs that have not yet vested. The "powers that be" realize this is a scam though, so it's not continued theft of future earnings, there is a phaseout formula. Search term: "Nelson formula". Also, child support will be adjusted based on income. Search term: "Smith-Ostler". Lastly, you may be ordered to maintain the standard of living that the spouse was used to during the marriage. This is calculated as an average over the last few years, so if you had a one time windfall you are screwed a third time here.

How hot was your ex? Was she asian?

Meta zuck187 OP May 27

hot enough…. She was a thin athletic white girl from California. Blond hair blue eyes. I’ll never try to date a western girl again. Only Asians from now on after my terrible experience
