I want to challenge myself and grow my skills but without working more than 40 hours per week. I want to have time to do sports, date, and read books. At Amazon Aurora, it's hunger games. From what I'm hearing here on Blind, Meta is brutal as well. Where is it better? What companies are free of this mentality that if you don't work long hours then you're not ambitious. I'd gladly make 30% less money and work 30% less. White, 3 yoe, TC 190 CAD
You overestimate yourself
“Like myself” is indication you’re not top talent buddy
As always it depends on team, not company. There are Amazon teams that are great. Microsoft has shit teams where you’ll never see the light of day too Meta has great teams too G has some awful teams Apple has good and bad. Just pick a company, hope you don’t get shafted, profit
Pipe down the ego a bit (“top talent like myself”) and join literally any tech company with good WLB reviews on blind. If your TC is any indication, you’re early career anyways and will learn in any semi-decent growth co. Most of the FAANG-tier companies have promo hunger games at this point, they’re all either too big or too talent-rich already. If you’re at faang, either get along with the hunger games or scrape by waiting for vests till you hit your financial goals. There’s no other way in these cos.
Pipe down my ego and work with people who I can't learn much from? It maybe works for someone with more years of experience and an established career but not for me. I don't care about the presumed prestige of FAANG at this point since I already have one on my resume. I just want to work with smart people and monetize my skills.
No, OP. Everyone’s saying to be less of a prick. You’re not as smart, nor as talented, as you think you are
I feel like you over estimate your own ability and importance. "Top talent like myself " is crazy what you been doing CRUD applications?
Top talent - yes. Top experience - no. Better than CRUD though.
I have been to many companies and here is what I observed. There are two types. One is the unambitious let's just survive type. At these places there is nothing exciting going on and no one wants to do anything above and beyond. Boring... The other kind is the opposite. They want to make more money they want to be industry leader get more market share, or if small wants to grow. These places all want to establish a high performance culture and be like Amazon, but they screw up I one way or another. For example set high goals but don't provide enough resources, or not hiring the right poeple. Amazon have figured this out. So if you want a high performance high reward a lot going on environment that you can actually enjoy. Nowhere better than Amazon. Amazon is large and some teams fit your criterion. Your best bet is to find a better team within.
Sorry to break it to you but you’re not talented. Now go eat a 🍌
Top talent and 40 hours don’t go in the same sentence. No one ever won the Olympics doing the bare minimum.
Bad comparison. You're talking about the top 100 people in the world in each discipline. This is like top 0.01%. This is like saying you cannot put wealthy and 40 hours in the same sentence because billionaires work every waking hour.
How many people in our industry are truly top talent? Maybe 10000? I haven’t met many that don’t spend most of week days on work or side projects. To become one you need to put in the work. Billionaires are pretty much all workaholics lol. They became insanely wealthy by putting insane focus on one thing for decades. Average age of one is 65. Wealth has nothing to do with being a top talent. You coulda joined nvidia in 2019, been mediocre, and still have 10m+.
What qualifies you as top talent? Maybe share that so people don’t mock you.
Top university with top grades, top performance feedback at Amazon. What else would you like?
Sounds pretty average for most Amazonians
Try some research companies, or military contractors? You’re going to get less than 100K with only 3YoE
This is not making 30% less. I don't want to make peanuts.
Have you considered setting limits to your working hours? Even in companies with hyper growth as long as you’re meeting your goals, it’s likely that you’re not going to get fired. Sure you might take a hit on your career growth but who knows, may be better WLB might actually boost it.
