I have a set list of questions I have in mind. But based on the feel and flow of the conversation I'll adjust them as needed. I try to get a sense of their leadership style and how they view their role as a leader. If they're a micro managing throw their team under the bus type I try to find out up front. I ask things like what is their management style. Describe a good vs bad employee. Tell me about a time they had to coach someone.
How do you uncover this type of information?
I guess you can't if you don't interview directly with the HM, but typically I think they would be part of the interview rounds. You could also probe the others if there is someone currently on the team that conducts one of the interviews.
Ask him scenario questions, as if you were working with him. That should tell you a lot. I guess you want to know if he is micromanaging, generous, supportive and knowledgeable; at least. Those items don usually go together tho.

Good clarification, in this case I am the IC interviewing the DM. I am also interested in the red flags and learnings from the senior leadership perspective
1. Look for a firm handshake 2. Ask where do they see themselves in 5 years 3. Judge them by their clothes and shoes 4. Check their public Git commits and count of LC Hards
Ask them these questions: 1. How do you expand influence without increasing effort? 2. What is your greatest strength? What is your greatest weaknesses? What traits do you believe a successful HM needs?
