Each time you click on the button, you’re warped into a different dimension where you must endure 500 million years. You can’t sleep, you’re immortal, and must go through every second of it. There is no source of entertainment and you’re stuck in an ever expanding, borderless room with nothing. After 500 million years pass, you zap back to reality and receive $10K. The catch is your memory is wiped and the 500 million years you spent in the other dimension is instantaneous in reality. From a third person’s perspective, they would see you repeatedly clicking a button and receive $10K x number of clicks. As you’re clicking it, because your memory is wiped each time, the reality you perceive will be no different than an onlooker observing what is happening. The closest analogy is receiving an insane amount of money after a dream but you don’t even remember you dreamt. Do you mash that button until it breaks or do you continue with your life? This is based on Sota Sugahara’s short manga, 500 million year button. Tc 190
There’s a black mirror episode similar to this
Is the time in the 500 million year dimension enjoyable? The 10k doesn’t really matter imo.
Realistically you would go insane after 2 weeks. But whether you enjoy that time, does that matter if you won’t remember anything when you come back to reality?
Memory is not the one matters. Experience is. You wouldn’t remember many of things that has long passes in your life anyways, but the pain you re enduring in the moment is real. I would rather have enjoyable moments but constantly forget about them, than living in pain with normal memory
Hell no. Never been so certain in my life.
For real. Who the hell said yes to torture-ish boredom for 10k?
10k for 500 million years? The markets are indeed down, lowballs are the play. 🙃
I think this is what Google will pay in the near future if they continue low-balling: work for us for 500 million years, we will pay you $10K.
Wait till you see salary at IBM 😌
Somebody just watched Severance
Dear lord no, hell no. Who would do this?
In this alternate dimension, do I remember my life from before I clicked the button?
Yes you remember everything. And as you approach the 500 million year mark you will also probably realize that you’re gonna be doing this over and over again until the reality you have enough cash.
Then I wouldn’t do it for any amount of money. The button presser me wouldn’t do it to the alternate dimension me. For the same reason I wouldn’t torture another person for any amount of money.
I am really stupid maybe but i dont see why people dont want to press it.I won't remember it and it's done in 1 sec in terms of my current reality. So 10k/sec i will break the button.
The problem is you would need to experience 500 million years of nothingness. That’s definitely not worth 10k. Maybe if it was life changing money that would make you uber-rich then it might be worth considering.
But if I don’t remember it then the “real me” would think I pressed the button and got 10k. So why would I not press the button to receive another 10k? The only time you would know to not press the button again would be after you’re in the other dimension experiencing your descent into insanity. The only way to know to not press the button is if there is a disclaimer about the 500 million year thing. Otherwise I’m breaking that button to get a lot of money. I just wouldn’t know any better.
If my memory is wiped clean then I have no idea how terrible it was I'd press it, then forget why I wouldn't smash it again, which leads me to smashing the button again.
in this situation you know what will happen, but don't have firsthand experience of it.
But knowing what will happen isn't the same as having a memory of it. Wouldn't it be the same concept as if some paid me to eat insanely hot pepper. I know it'd be painful and cause discomfort but I don't actually know how it'd feel till I ate it. The memory of that if it was bad enough would stop me from doing it again because it wasn't worth it. But in this case I have zero memory of that experience so it does nothing to me.
Very difficult decision! What if we already clicked it and in the simulation right now? 🤔
Initial reaction for many people would be hell no but the more you think about it the more you consider clicking might not be a bad option.
I hold a principle that suffering exists, but I should try to reduce it and avoid inviting it. I don't want to create another entity only to suffer
