Where To Move As A Portlander Post-Grad

I’m gonna graduate soon, and I kind of don’t know where I want to be location wise. I’m a native Portlander and I know there’s some opportunities there, but I’ve always wanted to be in the Bay cause that’s where the action is. There’s also Seattle but it’s kind of a worse version of Portland IMO. I miss some of my Portland friends and the PNW vibes, and I miss my pets one of whom is on the older side. Family I FaceTime a lot so it’s not as much of a worry right now for me at least What should I do and why? Bay: - Lots of opportunities - The place to be in tech - Only a few friends all on south side of Bay, job is in SF or Palo Alto - Could go a few times a year for long durations to see pets and friends, since I’ll have a basically remote-first job I’ll be almost certainly getting a return offer from - Mom will be sad most of the time - CoL is 🤡 Portland: - Get to see pets and high school friends all the time - No sales tax(!!!), saner CoL - Rainy and gloomy half of the time, nice when not - Wilsonville is mid - Less interesting tech, could hit cap on career growth much faster, but more distant from the rat race - Feels like I wouldn’t have escaped the burbs I grew up in - Mom will not be sad Seattle: - Could go home more often - Also PNW - Gloomier - Not sure about securing remote work - 2nd place to be in tech - Mom will be less sad TC 🥜 (not at Comcast)

I worked for a while in PDX. I prefer Portland a lot, lot more than the Bay Area. Seattle is ok but Portland is a lot better when you add in Beaverton and Hillsboro as well. If you are single, dating is a lot better in Portland than the Bay Area and Seattle.

Very good point, did not think about the dating part

I’ve lived in both Portland and the Bay for an extended duration. I love them both. Can’t hurt to move to SF for a while, then move back home if you want. Pretty different places for sure. You’re young. See the world.
