Found that I underpaid my 2023 taxes and Owe a penalty of around $1500. In the California 2023 storms which was declared a disaster zone, my fence fell down and broke. Do I then have a valid penalty waiver claim saying that I was affected in my 2023 return I am filing now?
Yes, in turbo tax you can select that you lived and affected by disaster, include county and state name while filling tax. Penalty will mostly go away in turbo tax. I was doing this yesterday and was worried abt penalty, prior to finding this info. https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/how-do-i-get-rid-of-an-underpayment-penalty-since-i-m-in-a-federal-disaster-area-california-and-wasn/00/3164353 https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/for-california-storm-victims-irs-postpones-tax-filing-and-tax-payment-deadline-to-nov-16 https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/tax-relief-in-disaster-situations
On different note, you could check if you can claim or avoid tax on fence expenses. https://blog.turbotax.intuit.com/tax-news/irs-provides-tax-relief-for-california-storm-victims-53808/
No. The disaster relief extended the due date to October already
Sorry I was not clear here. I meant the following. Disaster happened on March 2023. IRS gave as deadline extension last year to October,2023 for for 2022 taxes. Now, I’m talking about this year. I under-withheld for income in 2023 and hence when I am filing now, for 2023 income, I have a penalty. My question in since the disaster happened in 2023 and I was affected, can I claim penalty waiver now?
