Do you know anyone working for X? What is the work culture like?
Better culture in general than Google, and similar comp. Some more mature bets do pay in private equity. The complaint is usually around the uncertainty and "ground moving underneath you" or "chasing a moving target" that comes with the types of projects worked on in X and other bets. One has to adapt to this. Check out "The Gimbal" which is available online for a sense of what I mean. Less career driven and more mission driven than Google. Overall, it's pretty cool and the office is really exciting. (Though fewer food options than main campus!)
Is waymo considered part of x? Comp wise waymo pays much less, but again you never know what that paper money will be worth.
Waymo is not technically organizationally part of X, but the cultures are very similar, they grew up together, they work out of the same building, etc. Why do you say Waymo pays much less? AFAIK that's false, at least if you count Waymo equity.
Huli lifer Thanks so much for sharing. Is the hiring bar higher than that of Google? What do they usually look for in candidates — like anything more specific than what Google looks for? More research oriented careers or PhD or more mission driven?
I don't think the bar is higher per se, if anything maybe technically lower. What's different is I think that X and bets tend to higher for specific roles rather than just the best of the best generalists. So for example they might need somebody who is a SWE but familiar with the medical field and good with statistics... So they would look for that specifically. The funny thing is that since things change direction so much you can end up with teams that have really diverse skills. For the robotics projects, including Waymo, there are decent numbers of roboticists.
Hodinkee waymo isn’t a part of X. Companies like verily, waymo etc are a part of alphabet. X is a part of alphabet
This is true but everything I've said on this thread applies to other bets as well as X proper. There are some specific extra things about Waymo culture that aren't necessarily in the general X culture, but they're still very aligned.
Huli lifer do u work for X and did u get there through a referrral? I don’t see a blind tag for X like there is for waymo or verily.
I worked at Google before and Waymo now. I did not use referrals. I responded to a Google recruiter on LinkedIn and for Waymo I applied through a job posting.
Thanks huli lifer. Seems like google to another alphabet initiative is easier to transfer. Are you in a similar role at google and waymo?
Pm me
Would like to know more as I'm sure others would, too. Why PM?
I second the above. If you have information about X, it'd be great if you would choose to post that for the community to see.
