I am thinking to consider Microsoft as my next employer. The offer is in process with one group. I have interviews lined up with other groups for same level as well. There are few things which I want to know about for awareness purposes. (1) Coming from Amazon, I have seen folks being put on focus and PIP because of URA and performance reasons. Also, there is lot of toxicity in Amazon as well. How is Microsoft in those terms, how is their performance evaluation, do they have same focus and PIP and same toxicity? (2) If I join and I didn't like the team or work, can I switch internally or would it blocked by my organization or manager? Is it flexible to change teams internally and is it encouraged? (3) Are there any orgs or specific teams from whom I should stay way or not join because of their culture and poor work life balance, too much toxicity, too much PIP culture? (4) If I do end up getting multiple offers from different groups, is TC different across groups such as Teams, Azure or they fall under the same pay range? (5) How is work balance in Microsoft overall or any Azure, Teams group?
Let me know if you really get offer from Microsoft. They are only interviewing candidates to put them into their hiring pool.
Hiring pool means?
1 depends entirely on your particular team / manager. Overall it's pretty good, but there are some awful managers out there. 2 it's pretty common to move around. Managers can block transfers but that's not normal. The best time to move is after you get a good review. If your manager does block your transfer, start interviewing with other companies, that's not a manager your want to stay with in any case. Speaking of interviewing at other companies... Transfers within Microsoft are generally no easier than getting hired in the first place. You still have to do a full interview loop. So if you don't like your team or your manager, you should interview both inside and outside Microsoft. It's the same amount of effort either way. 3 I've heard that some teams in azure are really bad. But not all. I wouldn't rule it out, but do be careful. I was in Outlook, and the culture there is great. Good leadership and good people all around. Better than most of Microsoft from what I heard. 4 Compensation depends on your level, not the team you work in. Good luck!
