I have a friend who doesn’t work in tech, but she was looking to get into an executive assistant role. Just curious if there are any EA’s on the site here and if so what do you think about it? She’s in the Seattle area and was interested in any tech company, either Amazon, Microsoft, etc. She’s coming from healthcare. Thanks Edit: Sorry, should’ve clarified she’s spent about 3 to 4 years doing office management/admin assistant in healthcare. So she has some experience but it’s not precisely the same.
If she's coming from absolutely no admin type experience then a standard EA role might be tough to come by, especially at a big tech company. Probably an Admin Assistant role or a "floater" EA supporting teams or directors would be the best bet to break into it.
Thank you, I should’ve clarified she is for a feedback as to what it’s like in the role, the good the bad the ugly etc.
She should try starting as an office assistant or something generic then get close with some exec. No one wants to have to train an EA.
Thank you, I should’ve clarified she does have office admin experience , looking for feedback as to what it’s like in the role, the good the bad the ugly etc.
Several I know started with Msft as a vendor admin. if they are solid in performance, will not be difficult to get picked up as an FTE admin
If she has EA functional skills and experience and a strong resume, she should apply. Definitely helps to get a referral first though if she has any connections at those companies. She should be prepared for a full day of interviews if she gets beyond phone screen.
Your friend should seriously consider how they handle (a) stress and (b) working in a fast paced environment. IMO: depending on how many leaders are being supported, EA team size, and work/life balance transitioning into the fast paced environment can be a bit daunting (but doable). Be sure her resume highlights any transferrable skills that apply to the EA role and check for any spelling or grammar mistakes (especially if 'attention to detail' is a listed skill). Have her practice her verbal interviews. Interviewing with tech companies is a longer process (most include a general phone screen and then in person stage can range between 1-4hrs minimum with multiple people and/or days).
These are transferrable to the EA space in Amazon. Most EAs support 2-4 execs. Tons of training opportunities and a team oriented environment.
Those companies have healthcare divisions that might leverage her experience.
Good call, will check
