Little bit about me, a senior at state university in CA graduating in 2024 and really want to work for Databricks (new grad)applied and spoke with two different recruiters initially and got similar response like engineering team reviewed your profile and decided not to move forward. I have two internships experience with Amazon. I am requesting any advice from databricks employees how to get a chance to interview, does school name really matter for the company. TC-0
What role? For DataBricks having hands on experience with actual customers from another company helps
For new grad swe, worked with scala and pyspark during recent internship related to data.
I also did two internships at Amazon (2023 new grad). I can refer you to Atlassian.
Thank you, will dm you once new grad roles open up.
It’s just any other company lol. Also yes, you are amazon intern #154738388, there isn’t anything that differentiates you from the other 40k plus applicants
My point is not about bragging, asking advice from employees how to move to on-site.
School matters they hire all Berkeley kids basically. Amazon hires hundreds of interns so it’s not automatically considered a “good” internship it depends on the project. Don’t let it get to you bro, Databricks is know for having a very hard resume screen
Thank you.
If you already have a foot in the door at Amazon or other FAANG, just do those. Databricks is super top-heavy right now, and no longer a great place to be for new grads; I'm unfortunately seeing more and more new grads struggling to grow within the company.
Thank you for the insight.
Make some connections with DB people in your area. After some time, ask for a referral.
I tried this, got referral twice and done two different recruiter calls and later got same response like engineering team not decided to move forward at this time, so I was just wondering how to get to interview stage.
Ask your referrals what those teams are looking for. Are your referrals in the same domain?
Why on earth do you want to come here though? It has bad wlb, no career growth, is super hierarchical
I liked my internship work and felt would be similar work at databricks and also thought great company for career progression.
How is it a great company for career progression? The promo speed here is much slower than even Google
do not join! it is a shit hole here
Thank you for insight, do you think joining as a new grad also is not good for career progression.
OP explain what work you were doing that is in the domain of Databricks engineering. Using spark and doing ETL is not Databricks engineering. The teams we have create and improve performance of spark (and the various ecosystem around it, delta for example) they don’t do ETL. From what I see you mention you likely don’t have a resume that shows strong swe experience but DE ETL.
With my recent internship got experience in spark and ETL analyzing data and building new datasets with these. If possible can you review my resume and suggest any improvements.
There is only one team really at Databricks were they are data engineering and that’s the data team building out internal pipelines. Aside from that it would be the Professional Service and Field Engineering, which I don’t think hire new grads . Stick to SWE related work and NOT DE get some experience and then apply back . It’s clear you need to do some research and learn .
It’s not necessarily school obsessed. It’s just that there are thousands of people with your identical profile: Amazon sde intern from a mediocre school. Why in the world would they pick you? You need to give them a compelling reason to do so
Also you say “school obsessed” like it’s a bad thing. Maybe take some responsibility for the fact that you might not go to a “good” school. Not to mention there are plenty of state school people at databricks. Something to consider
I might not have money to attend good school and there is nothing wrong with that, I am taking to some people in the loop not one from mediocre school at least for new grad.
