Am I the asshole for outing my friend to his (religious) parents?
I’m leaving for a whirlwind biz trip tomorrow. Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong, back to Tokyo, and a stop in SF. I always stay near Ginza in Tokyo, so I’m fine on food there. And being treated in HK, so no down time. Where is a good restaurant near Taipei 101? Any night scene safe for biz traveler?
I want a damn recommendation ... not a LMGTFY.
Bellavita has some decent but expensive restaurants. So do the hotels nearby. Taipei 101 has Din Tai Fung (DO NOT MISS THIS) and a food court. For a good restaurant with night scenes go to 85th floor in Taipei 101, Diamond Tony Restaurant.
If you can, try booking Diamond Tony in advance and get the table to the window.
Excellent, just what I was looking for. I sent an email to my assistant to book us at Tony’s for Thursday or Friday night, window table. Din Tai Fung looks amazing, too. Thanks for the help! I’m staying at the W, which is right by the Bellavita. I’d shop, but I’m staying in Ginza twice this trip and I will likely blow my load there. 😭

Nah, total millennial.
Go to a night market
There's a sushi place in Bellavita that is quite nice but if you're coming from Japan you probably don't need sushi. If you have a few people to go out with, I'd recommend Kanpai Classic. The atmosphere is lively and they have nice steak and sake. Otherwise, Shin Kong has Topcap Steakhouse, which is quite well regarded. And the new Breeze that just opened has two high end steak houses and a few other restaurants that are supposed to be good but I haven't been yet. For any of these, the W's concierge desk can make a reservation. Have fun in Taipei 😊
If your adventurous street food wise, go to some of the night markets. Shilin (Sp?) is the big one. Din Tai Fung is great, Ippudo for ramen. There is a peking duck place called Celestial in the Grand Formosa hood that is very good. Big locals joint and better if you speak Mandarin but you can get by on English. There is also an excellent Korean family owned joint we've gone to multiple times but would have to dig up the card. Bar scene has changed quite a bit over the last several years so not sure what's hot these days but do love the W pool bar to have a drink and smoke a stogie. Hit up Cigar Gallery if you smoke them, very good place close to the 101/W and of course they have Cubans...
Go to this place for beef noodle, it's about 15-20 min walk from 101 but every time I go back I go here MuJi Beef Noodles No. 239號, Wuxing Street, Xinyi District, Taipei City, Taiwan 110 +886 2 2722 2707 https://maps.app.goo.gl/SJYcGyBt5nUAsVY16 Get beef noodle and their beef pancake rolls
Thanks for all the recommendations. We hit up Diamond Tony and Din Tai Fung. Asked the W concierge to recommend some local bars, and was not disappointed. I have tons of ramen in Japan, and in Tokyo before and after this Taipei leg, so steered clear of Japanese food. Good visit. I’ll be back in February, so I’ll keep these other recommendations in my pocket.
