Hi, I would really appreciate some feedbacks / advice regarding my next internship decision. Currently I am in my junior year and thus it will be my final internship before graduation. Any feedback / suggestion is welcome! Intern compensation are not dramatically different among these and I am more interested learning about the learning opportunity & intern conversion and probably TC on the NG level. I would really appreciate if I can learn some insights but also the poll will be really helpful for me as well. Thank you everyone for the time in advance! PS. The cockroach labs is the company behind the database: cockroachdb
All those companies sound great. My advice: optimize for internship quality and growth. Snuff out who has the best intern program and who is going to give you the better projects. For internships, having that structured development experience is super helpful to your career.
Did you intern at anywhere else other than IBM? Are you at a top school and have a high GPA? I can’t even get coding challenges/first round interviews at Coinbase and Cockroach Labs. I go to a top 10 CS school and am now a junior so I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong unfortunately.
Interviewing is based largely on luck. I’m sure you’ve gotten interviews at some elite places with that background
Cockroach labs ?!? What moron names their company after a filthy bug ? I would never work there.
You ok?
Yes. Just hate bugs.
What made them name cockroach?
Probably something idiotic like they are persistent and survive through everything. Lots of other smart choices for that.
Makes sense, but imagine having to explain that each time after initial repulsion.
Seriously, the name has the power to shoo away even some of the biggest fans of the company and product !

CDB (cockroach labs), I’ve heard good things about internships if u are wanting real experience that has impact. Plus you’ll probably have very public PRs on OSS
I work at Databricks, and our internship program is pretty great. Cockroach Labs also sounds awesome if you like distributed systems works and want to live in NYC.
Cockroach internship is remote, so don’t have to be nyc, I guess same with others too
Obviously, I'm biased, but I'd advice to accept the offer from Cockroach Labs for a couple of reasons: 1. our interns work on real projects that get merged into the main codebase and then are later used by our users - i.e. you'll have a chance to make an impact and see the results of your work. Here are a few of the blog posts written by our previous interns to see what things they worked on: https://www.cockroachlabs.com/blog/vectorized-hash-joiner/ https://www.cockroachlabs.com/blog/vectorizing-the-merge-joiner-in-cockroachdb/ https://www.cockroachlabs.com/blog/unordered-distinct-vectorized-engine/ 2. many of our interns later return as full-time employees (I don't know the exact numbers but to me as an engineer it feels like more than 50% of our return offers are accepted; I'm also not sure what's the industry average is) - this speaks about the culture and the people. I'm myself an example of this - my internship at Cockroach Labs was the last before my graduation, it was a blast, and I happily accepted the return FTE offer and still am very pleased with that decision.
Does Cockroach still count internships towards your equity vesting if you join full time?
Yes, that time counts towards vesting.

Never heard of Cockroach Labs before. That doesn't sound like a good name for a company.
