After getting the dream job at FAANG / MAANG / PBC do you still participate in Leetcode contests / Codeforces?
Has anyone noticed this?. It’s like night and day difference. My kids have iPads with 30min screen time lock and Nintendo Switch which we monitor time as well. They don’t get them everyday either and play outside a lot. I’m a millennial and had basically unrestricted SNES and N64 access as a child so in contrast I am very restrictive. I’m considering ditching them all together because why keep something that is a net negative - but I’m trying to teach responsible technology use. Tough decision.
Special needs kid here. They explicitly told us to limit screen time. Another thing to ponder. There's a lot of non verbal cartons on the tubes. Your kid won't pick up or worse regress in speech because of those.
Most here were on screens for hours on the weekends at 5-6 y/o and turned out fine. The screen issue seems to be for the early development stages of the brain. Obviously screen time doesn't mean tiktok and similar bs. It means Gameboy or PS or some PC game. Don't hinder your kids' problem solving development (no, 30 minutes is not enough to do anything).
It depends... my kids do not play games at all, they are not interested. They asked me to increase their screen time temporarily because they are doing certain research. Focus not only on what they aren't doing but also what they do. How many activities do they have? Do they have topics to discuss?
I don’t think you should get rid of it, i think it’s part of teaching them to balance their life. And let them know, so they’re cognizant of it. I don’t want my kid to be tech illiterate, so they get screen time regularly. Their tests are all on ipads and comfort with ipads means the difference between a great score and a good score
Depends what kind of screen - TV is different to device. Read The Anxious Generation… about how Gen-Z were raised in a “phone-based childhood” vs a play-based childhood” and it resulted in a meteoric rise in mental health problems among them. It’s terrifying and has made me spend much less time scrolling … or doing anything with my phone (the guilty pleasure of Blind notwithstanding…).
I think it's more about the all round development due to the time spent doing other things. Screens are harmful + a whole experience like playing outside that make their lives better. My hypothesis. Could be complete BS.and wrong.
It’s medically proven.
Good to know, thanks! I wasn’t aware. Our pediatrician just advised us to keep at an hour max per day not maybe 0 is better.
