Another post cliff MSFT 62 here. Been here for 5 years. Was going to interview last year after my cliff but got scared after the layoffs. I am trying to decide if I should go pure money (Amazon), take more risk and swing big for the fences with a startup, or stay at MSFT and try to take advantage of the DTO to travel. Amazon pros - money and career growth. Start up pros I’ve always wanted to live in San Francisco and work at a startup. I am young with no kids so now feels like the time. I also have a couple of good friends who live there and love it but it’s hard to pass up the Amazon money now that it’s staring me in the face. Start up has about 100k a year worth of stock options but I put it as 0 as that is paper money compared to what are present at Amazon / MSFT. Microsoft With DTO I am able to take 4-5 weeks off a year. Not sure if that is worth a 90k pay cut though. I also currently have on call on my team every 5-6 weeks so I am already used to getting paged in the middle of the night. I just got promoted to 62 and talking to my manager it would be at least another 2-3 years before the Senior 63. 5 YOE #microsoft #amazon #swe #seattle #bayarea
Wow that TC is lower than my new grad TC, I’m 61 now and make 245k last year. Definitely leave
How are you at 245? What was your initial base + stock and what is it now? I’ve never seen an internal 61 making this much.
That’s factoring in what my stock was valued at when vested, my strike price was around 250
The startup is a huge pay cut as well once you consider location. Go to Amazon where you’ll have pressure like a startup AND get compensated for it. Don’t get fleeced by some startup dream. They can go under at anytime too.
186K? Serious? Leave now…
Go to Amazon. Enjoy the money. If you don't like it come back to Amazon after a year or two
Watching really good engineers get fucked over by Amazon recently, there's no amount of money that would convince me to join. Don't waste your time, if I were you I'd keep looking.
100k difference…. Leave!
Share more about startup. What is the valuation? Round of funding? Size of the startup?
Bro, I’m going to interview for 62 and I seeing all these post makes me feel I earn way more in Cisco
Startups are for a very specific person, you can live in SF without having to work for a startup if you really want. You will trade your soul working for a startup (that my opinion having worked for some). Ask yourself what attracts you to a startup, if it’s the potentially of “making it” realize like 1% of startups actually make it enough for you to cash out.
A big part of it is the ownership and focus. At Microsoft we really are so far removed from the customer and I find it pretty demotivating. Also a lot of the really strong engineers that I have met spent some time earning their stripes at a start up where they really had to dig in and write a bunch of code.
