This is a wrong solution for the problem. We need to stop contract companies to cheat in h1b process and stop big companies to hire contractors for half of what FTEs make for the same job.. stopping h1b will just makes it harder to attract talent

Cisco James b. OP Jul 2, 2020

Well, you may be right but so far it is first attempt to solve the problem that Americans refrain from STEM education.

Coherent Logix Alpha_7 Jul 2, 2020

Why do you think Americans refrain from getting a STEM degree?

Apple Pptd58 Jul 2, 2020

Since when Cisco engineers started working 80 hrs a week ? 🤣

Google xoogler123 Jul 2, 2020

The opportunity cost is that companies won't be able to grow at the same rates because of the smaller pool of workers. Revenue that would have gone double will be just 1.5x. Some companies will maybe expand offices in places like Canada, UK, or Europe. If you're not qualified for a tech job, you're not qualified for tech job.

Microsoft iam.legend Jul 2, 2020

On a side note, what makes you think something that's bad for the biggest, most powerful banks and hedge funds in the world will be endorsed by any President in this country? 😂

Cisco James b. OP Jul 2, 2020

@Microsoft agree with you on that, no Democrat or Republican president had the courage and the interest to stand up against the cooperate. Apparantly, this President does.

Microsoft iam.legend Jul 2, 2020

Heard of the upcoming elections?

Cisco James b. OP Jul 2, 2020

Sure, it is fine too, other Presidents done nothing.

Google xoogler123 Jul 2, 2020

Just to sum up the thread: OP: H1B people earn little and drive wage down Others: but tech jobs pay well OP: but H1B people work long hours Others: not that long, don't exaggerate things OP: but H1B people don't spend much Others: what's the point? In short, OP is against people who earn a relatively high salary (compared to the national average), who work hard (long hours) and spend frugally, which are the virtues highly regarded among conservatives. At the same time, OP is supporting a GOP president, presumably make OP a conservative who is in favor of the idea that if you can't compete on making good salary by working hard and saving harder, you ask the government for protection, right? Something is off here. Oxymoronic much?

Cisco James b. OP Jul 2, 2020

I'm not Republican but I do support President Trump and I do support capitalism but not the pig style. I also believe that America jobs should be for Americans first. What's is called labor shortage is artificial and to say Americans are stupid and can't write 3 lines of python code is totally wrong. Just a reminder that American astronauts landed on the moon before h1b visa was invented.

Facebook acg30 Jul 2, 2020

“I’m not republican but support Trump and capitalism”, well, that means you are a republican by heart!

Microsoft iam.legend Jul 2, 2020

Americans need to stop making this about race or nationality. United States has traditionally encouraged healthy competition which has driven the hyper-growth in this country. No one should be asking the government to shut down the competition so they can make more money. Either compete, or stay content in your current job.

Cisco James b. OP Jul 2, 2020

Please educate yourself about economies, they don't work like that. You cannot have manufacturing employee compete with one who work in Asia or Africa. The visa thing is not exactly equivalent but every country protects its labor in one way or another. Corporations here take advantage

Microsoft iam.legend Jul 2, 2020

The idea of a decentralized capitalistic economy is minimum governance, and business-government separation. Why should the government protect citizens when it undermines the corporations, and thereby the shareholders of the corporations, who also happen to be other American citizens? Another obvious truth: no one's native here; either you came here 200 years ago, 20 years ago, or recently. They are all the the same thing theoretically.

Apple uBLM50 Jul 2, 2020

There's some truth to H1B abuse by IT service companies but that's in no way related to FTEs on work visas at big tech companies. My team routinely interviews people without any knowledge of their immigration/citizenship status and it takes a miracle to find a candidate who can clear all the interview rounds. That's not going to suddenly change because work visas were stopped- it's just going to take an even bigger miracle to find anyone to hire.

Why does it take a miracle? What’s the role, and what kind of questions are you guys asking?

Apple uBLM50 Jul 5, 2020

Not software.

We need to fix our education. In Asia and I’m guessing India, being good at Math or science is not a nerdy thing. There are also plenty of women in STEM. Here, my American born friends had to hide that they are good at Math as a kid for fear of being bullied. The culture doesn’t glorify engineering but rather put down “nerds”. Even the word has bad and condescending intent. It’s cooler to be famous on YouTube, Instagram or now Tiktok. Liberal arts is overrated. Why study gender studies and then claim life is unfair? Too many people go into law and too many lawsuits. The list goes on. If we don’t fix education and just ban H1B, we will be screwed.

Cisco James b. OP Jul 3, 2020

True

Amazon qstn6 Jul 4, 2020

OP - you said you are an immigrant and you wouldn't have been allowed to enter in US and complain like this if ex-presidents enacted H1B ban. How hypocritical!

Cisco James b. OP Jul 4, 2020

I don't call this country President ret... https://twitter.com/nyledimarco/status/1170407786837991424?lang=en

Amazon qstn6 Jul 4, 2020

What is your point? Trump had called anyone he doesn't like 100 offensive names. Calling him ret**d is nothing compared to that.
