Tech salaries rocketed up over the last few decades and now are either stagnant or dropping. What do you think will happen 20 years from now, indexed off other white collar salaries?
My theory is developers will make about what electricians make. You can make great money. Most make good money.
This is already the case. You’ve got tons of people like me who work chill boring jobs in non tech making pretty good money (103K TC 1 YOE LCOL) and only a small subset of SWEs in VHCOL making high $$$
electricians typically can’t earn 103k in LCOL
Although we talk a lot about AI replacing software engineers I think it’s likely to displace most other white collar jobs first. The strongest feature of LLMs is summarizing data which is 60%+ of the job description for roles like support/customer service, sales teams, recruiting, middle management, PMs, etc. As companies adopt AI tooling and start growing, I think they’ll need to hire fewer and fewer people in these positions which will increase competition for roles and lower salaries.
