Trivia Time - A Muslim president in a non Muslim country

Did you know that India, a predominantly non-Muslim country, elected a Muslim president? Dr. A.P.J. Kalam, a renowned scientist and engineer, served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. He is affectionately known as the “Missile Man of India” for his work on the country’s missile programs and was celebrated for his contributions to science and technology. During his presidency, the ruling party was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which led the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition government.

Zakir Hussain was president from 1967-69, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad from '74-'77. Consider that this was done within 20 yrs of very bloody and painful partition, purely based on religion and religious supremacy. MM Singh(minority religion, Sikh) was Prime Minister for 10 years. Country is secular because 80% of its population is Hindu. When it gets reduced under 50%, sharia will be the law(there are plenty of examples to show this in neighboring countries). As they say - Demography is destiny.

India doesn't "elect" Presidents. Presidents are appointed. I do agree that Western media's portrayal of Indian politics lacks cultural context and is usually messaged depending on the foreign policy of the incumbent government

Who appoints President? Presidents are also elected in India, it is not through direct elections though. Elected Representatives of Parliament and state assemblies vote to elect president.

President is elected. Get your facts straight @Expel. It's true it's not elected by the public but by MPs. Elections do happen for president

Western media is definitely biased, but kalam wasn't elected. The electoral college decides the president and it's a figurehead role anyway. It was fucked up that political parties wanted their own stooges in there instead of having him get a second term.

SmartThings JaySreR@M🏹 OP May 24

It’s so sad that you think like that for the great Dr A.P.J Kalam.

Salesforce fk6rh49fj May 24

What's sad? I didn't say he wasnt great. I said it was fucked up that they didn't want him to have a second term

India had three Muslim presidents so far. 1. Zakir Hussain 2. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed 3. APJ Abdool Kalam

Let’s elect a Muslim prime minister to set an example

Example of what

What's your point? President of India also has no real power. It's a parliamentary system and prime minister is top dog.
