I don't know, it kinda looks bad for BD.

Google zencapy Mar 15, 2023

It was an empty threat before. How do you like BD now?

ByteDance _bm Mar 15, 2023

Still like it tbh, it's a great place to be.

Is Facebook really banned in China? Is Snapchat really banned in China? Is Reddit really banned in China? Seriously it doesn't even need to be for security reasons. If you've been paying attention US and China have soured relationships recently.

True, C h i n a has banned so many US owned apps for over 10 years and created their own versions of them. A new non-chinese TikTok will emerge

SCOTUS gonna have to remind these children that the 1st amendment still trumps all regardless of how bad theyā€™re being beat in the free market

Someone remind this guy under national security reason supreme court cant do anything

ByteDance xCjaor00 Mar 15, 2023

Thatā€™s a super naive understanding of the issue. Government canā€™t just claim ā€œnational security issueā€ without satisfying some material proof evidentiary standards. Take a read of https://www.mtsu.edu/first-amendment/article/1134/national-security Basically TikTok is going to do anything short of selling to satisfy national security requirements and call the administrationā€™s bluff. Unless SCOTUS wants to establish the precedent that any foreign investor presence is de jure a national security issue, justice department will have a big uphill battle to show this is a national security issue and not a economic protectionism one

I keep saying it, but this is all really just political theater. Iā€™ve worked at two large Bay Area tech companies each with a large number of employees in China who had production access. In both cases there was plenty of PII data. Neither of those companies is being targeted, nor the likely dozens or 100s of other companies with China-based employees.
