Saving clicks for everyone else: Eh, some people are good, get lucky, or are great bullshitters
TLDR: he got a senior role and a promotion, then rode stock appreciation.
He's bragging about his compensation in 2021, due to insanely overvalued stock. Now he's selling career advice (lol) My TC in 2021 with 3yoe also crossed 700k as a swe2 (joined as a new grad) due to insane tech valuations. Please ask me for career advice!
Were you able to cash out enough gains?
It was a great time. I was an M1 that joined when the stock was around $170. Due to appreciation plus first refresh, my 2021 W2 income was $844K. I moved to a "better" opportunity that matched that comp, and then got laid off. I found a new job that I like, but for much lower TC.
Meta has a lot of rockstar engineers like this. promotions are handed out like Oprah
Many examples like him, here is a better one 2016: 117 K 2023: 900 K Not everybody is marketing themselves. It was a great decade for the tech workers in general. He rode the tide like many others. But he is cashing out on his personal brand now. All power to him. He is doing a good job of it. But his TC growth wasnât something extraordinary
it was extraordinary, just not really in his control. And of course like most of those careers advice sellers, they never talk about actual engineering
How is it extra ordinary? Almost everyone I know including myself did better than him.
The fact that he isn't continuing in that role should tell you that he realized that the promo game is for suckers, and there is more money and autonomy in selling courses to said suckers.
True but he doesnât really sell courses. Just a platform to get career advice
There is the ones looking for gold, and then the ones selling pickaxe. The funny part is when you see the pickaxe sellers telling you how amazing it is to look for gold, easy money, they are world class expert at that blablabla. So why they are selling pickaxe?
It's just stock going up. Once that stops, TC will revert to 600k or so.
He explains in a video that was essentially high performance ratings to best more stock, but also the stock price going up from 2019 to 2021. I think majority arenât that high tc unless they came in early and stayed for the ride
He was not able to sustain it
