I come from a data science background, an ML engineer now and in talks with FB for an SWE position in ML track. I need to grow into the design and other E6 qualifications, and I need your help. I am very ambitious to get an E6 offer, but also trying to be realistic. What should I do to clear the E6 bar? If I interview in a month, in six months, in a year? YoE: 7 TC: 350k (with stock appreciation) L64
What is your current level at MS? e6 compares to 65/66 at MS. Are you at that level at MS? Less than 10% of IC and managers at FB are level 6 and above. It isn’t common and FB tends to down level when hiring. The money is comparable at e5 for most candidates but it makes it easier to succeed. What is so important about E6? It sounds more like an accomplishment rather than something you are interested in. Is that a level you can’t reach at MS or are you really I retested in FB?
I am 64, sorry just added. Money is a big factor. I have nonprofit goals to spend. But also I am a very driven person, because, well I don’t know. Maybe just ego. But I also love ML an want to create impact. About the TC, e5 seems to be 360 and e6 600 per levels fyi, so the difference is rather big?
And I don’t think I can reach 600k at MS anytime soon.
E6 is not 600 FYI. Absolute top of band is 588 and that is for the bay area. Seattle is slightly lower
Reach the staff equivalent level at some other company (for example principal at msft) and then u can interview for E6.
If you haven't done e6 or principal type of work, it's almost impossible to clear the interview so you probably won't even get a chance to be in the e6 loop. No way you get leveled up through a couple of interviews.
What is an example of principal type work? Like having built an entire product from scratch? Or maintain a very big infrastructure?
OP, if you haven't done Principal level work, getting an E6 offer may be the worst thing to happen to you. Expectations are high. Getting poor ratings can destroy your self esteem - takes years to recover from that.
This is so true but people will turn deaf ears on you.
e6 and e5 loops are different. You first need to clear the resume review to be considered for an e6 candidate. Sorry dude, but I highly doubt that you’ll be considered as an e6 candidate based on your current level and yoe.
What’s “principal level” work?

Realistically, against your peers, how good of an engineer are you? Given it's Microsoft, are you top 5% compared to your peers impact wise? 7 yoe can make it, but you need to be really good and have built real world complex systems. If you think you have the skills and just need the interview practice, then something like grokking and refreshing and reading through your prior designs and why can help you. If you just don't have the necessary experience, it'll be hard to fake it without real world experience. If this is the case, I'd recommend asking yourself if you're on the right team to get that experience.
