Model Y 7 seats vs Model X

Hey fellow Blinders, Reaching out to you amidst my indecisiveness between the two cars. My primary use case is for a family of 4+dog : The kids are still in car seats and the dog is a 80 lbs brat. Kids' grandparents do visit us occasionally. Due to COVID travel hassles we may finally see them staying for a few months at a time. Hence I anticipate a 7 seater use case will truly be not a 2-3 times a year affair. I tried out the model Y 7-seater config at the Tesla store and ... it left me quite underwhelmed. The car is great, but the space isn't as much for 7 humans used to living in 1st world. The roof box may help if we want to the dog also along. Struggling with the car seats and getting in/out of the third row, the idea of Model X popped in my mind. Sure it's a great car and the new refreshed model brings in more coolness, am vary of Falcon Wing doors (feels a bit ostentatious?) and also a bit hesitant to get a refreshed Gen1 model where the car guesses if I want to go forward or reverse. The biggest hesitation for increased price is obvious, it's 110K for model X vs. ~60K for model Y. I can get 2 cars for that price. Wife said YOLO and go get the model Y but now she's not super excited about spending twice as much for the X. The plans were to get a Y as a replacement for the Sedan and get an XC90 / Pilot for the aging Audi in the next 2-3 years. The Volvo is a nice car...but I don't see how ICE cars will hold any value in the coming years (yes, I know they cars a depreciating asset). I am fine with the Pilot, but when you add all the comfort/luxury/safety features, the build price isn't all that different between the two. Plus Volvo still has the awesome European delivery system. So fucking undecided... what would y'all do? FWIW, TC: 450K, Yoe: 16

Get an xc90. It will solve your problems. I don’t think you have to worry much about depreciation. All Tesla’s depreciate like a rock since they update these cars constantly. I have a model x with the 6 seater config and I like it a lot. Fits a small crate in the back with the last row folded to take my 70lbs beast.

Do you regret not getting the 7 seat option? When just a 5th person is traveling then a lot of trunk space is available. Feels handy when just the mother in law visits 😉. And... What color interiors did you get with the dog? He/she is always crated ?

Model Y is way too small as a 7 seater. I tried it yesterday, the ride was bumpy and noisy. It felt like they just put a box on wheels with some computers inside. XC90, odyssey, pilot, atlas may be better options.

Bumpier and noisier than... Ice cars like the Atlas ? Did you drive the perf version?

Yes. Bumpier and noisier than the atlas. I think I drove the standard version. But I was told they all feel the same across different versions

How about get a model Y and rent when you need a 7 seater? Depends on how much use you need. In my case, we don’t have a AWD for trips to Yosemite etc but I found it cheaper to rent than buy as we don’t do many trips that need AWD.

True renting may be cheaper. But with kids and covid, own personal car feels practical and safer. And rental companies are less forgiving towards pet hair. And with a Tesla, long road trips should be less fatiguing with all the FSD tech (and the frequent charging stops 🙄).

ICE cars losing significant value is a decade away. I would buy a Kia Telluride or Palisade and enjoy the ride. The price premium for EVs still doesn’t make sense to me at all.
